Volume 1
Goethe's classic masterpiece, "Faust", sets the scene for the series and Volume 1. We meet Tanpopo: superhumanly intelligent and inhumanly emotionless, she is a mysterious and beautiful girl struggling between heart and mind. Kuro, the Devil in disguise, hears Tanpopo's lamentations and promises emotion and happiness, tricking Tanpopo into a deal for her soul.
Volume 2
Samuel Taylor Coleridge's, "Rime of the Ancient Mariner", along with some of his short poems, are the inspiration for Volume 2. Lessons of life and emotion are not for the faint of heart, as Tanpopo will learn. Kuro shoots off Specter Bark, and strikes down the albatross. His transformation takes a life and delivers a message of sorrow and remorse. Will Tanpopo understand?
Volume 3
"Devils and Foxes" and other tales from "Strange Stories From a Chinese Studio" inspire Volume 3. Kuro's efforts for Tanpopo to experience sadness intensify, and so too does his wickedness. An old woman, wary of the devil-boy, takes Tanpopo in, showing her kindness and affection. When the old woman dies by Tanpopo's hand, Kuro's plan will have come full circle and Tanpopo finally weeps.
